With the event scheduled for 13th-16th August at Leeds Beckett's Headingley campus – site of BiCon 2017 – booked, everything fine until the advent of the global Covid-19 pandemic. In March 2020, with the UK going into lockdown with movement and gatherings severely restricted and no certainty that it would be possible to run a large 'in person' event in August, the decision was taken to postpone the venue booking to 2021.
A virtual event was organised on the original weekend, using the Zoom and Discord software services. It was such a success, having a virtual event outside the main BiCon weekend may well be repeated in future years.
